About this site

This status page, a part of the Chicago Transit Experience project in development by Tony Coppoletta, a technology consultant, who just happens to be a fan of public transportation.

Currently, this site is in development and testing, and only the transit status data exists.

Goals
This site will ultimately attempt to catalog the entire city from the perspective of a transit rider and enthusiast, and will tie historical and statistical information about each station on the system to photos, nearby attractions, sounds, surrounding neighborhoods, and segments of the CTA-operated 'L' system through an extensive database and digital collection.

Our digital collection already consists of around 2,000 photos and 300 sound clips, totaling about 1 GB of data—and we've only just begun.

A major goal will be to help people realize that public transit in Chicago isn't just for getting you to work, but that it can get you just about anywhere you need to go, at most times (often all times) of the day or night, help people feel more savvy so they get on the 'L' and explore this great city, and learn how important public transit is to the city and its surrounding suburbs.

The inspiration
CTA operates the second most-heavily-used and extensive transit system in the United States, (MTA New York City Transit operating the larger), and too many people take it for granted instead of taking it everywhere.

I hope that this site will ultimately act as a resource that excites people about exploring Chicago by using transit, as well as providing a service to the public by helping to keep them better-informed about what's going on with their buses and trains.  The goal is to both improve and enhance the experience of being a transit-savvy urbanite.
